Komodo Glossary 2026 — Every Term You’ll See
Every traveler planning a Komodo trip encounters a handful of Indonesian acronyms and place names that aren’t obvious if you’ve never been. This glossary defines every term you’ll see in our guides, the Komodo NP booking app, and operator quotes.
The platforms
Komodo NP booking platform
Sistem Informasi Online Reservasi. The official Indonesian government booking platform for Komodo National Park tickets, launched mid-2026. Operated by BTNK under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Available at siora.id and as a mobile app on Google Play / App Store. Mandatory for every visitor since April 2026.
BTNK
Balai Taman Nasional Komodo. The government agency that manages Komodo National Park. They set the visitor quotas, regulate ranger services, collect park fees, and operate the Komodo NP booking platform platform. Headquartered in Labuan Bajo.
SIMAKSI
Surat Izin Masuk Kawasan Konservasi. A special-purpose permit required only for drone operation, commercial filming, advertising, music videos, or scientific research inside Komodo National Park. Costs approximately IDR 4,000,000 and requires 30 days of advance lead time. Standard recreational visitors do NOT need SIMAKSI.
The compliance
PNBP
Penerimaan Negara Bukan Pajak (Non-Tax State Revenue). The system that licenses tour operators to enter park waters. PNBP-licensed boats hold an SIUP (business license) tied to BTNK approval. Always verify your operator is PNBP-licensed before booking.
SIUP
Surat Izin Usaha Perdagangan. The Indonesian business operating license required for any tour operator. Combined with PNBP, this is the marker of a legitimate Komodo charter operator.
The destinations
Padar Island
The iconic three-bay viewpoint hike in Komodo National Park. A 30–45 minute climb leads to the panoramic ridge featured on most postcards of Komodo. Best photographed at sunrise.
Komodo Island (Loh Liang)
The largest island in the park and the primary ranger station for Komodo dragon trekking. “Loh Liang” is the harbor and ranger station name. Adjacent to Pink Beach.
Rinca Island (Loh Buaya)
The second main dragon-trekking island. Often has higher dragon-encounter rates and fewer crowds than Komodo Island. “Loh Buaya” means “crocodile bay” in old usage.
Pink Beach (Pantai Merah)
One of only seven pink-sand beaches in the world. The pink color comes from microscopic red foraminifera mixed with white coral sand. Located on Komodo Island.
Manta Point (Karang Makassar)
The premier manta ray cleaning station in the park. Snorkel or dive with manta rays gliding in shallow water. Peak season: November–March.
Taka Makassar
A pink-sand sandbar that appears at low tide between Komodo and Padar. Iconic drone-photo spot. Disappears at high tide.
Labuan Bajo
The gateway town on Flores island. Home to LBJ airport, the main marina, all tour operators, hotels, and the BTNK ranger headquarters. Population ~7,000.
The vessels
Phinisi
Traditional Indonesian wooden sailboat built by the Bugis people of South Sulawesi. The classic two-mast Indonesian sailing vessel, now adapted for tourism with cabins and dive decks. The most popular Komodo overnight option.
Liveaboard
A purpose-built or converted boat designed for multi-day diving trips, with private cabins, dive decks, and full meal service. Premium tier above standard phinisi.
Speedboat
Open or semi-covered fast boat used for day trips. 1.5–2 hours from Labuan Bajo to Padar Island. The most affordable way to see the park.
The fees
Conservation fee
A one-time-per-visit fee (IDR 200,000 foreign / 25,000 Indonesian) that funds park conservation programs — dragon monitoring, coral nursery, anti-poaching patrols, trail maintenance.
Ranger fee
Mandatory accompaniment cost: IDR 80,000 per group of up to 5 visitors. The ranger is a BTNK staff member (not your tour guide) responsible for safety and wildlife protocol.
Jetty fee
Port departure fee at Labuan Bajo harbor: IDR 100,000 foreign / 5,000 Indonesian per departure.
QRIS
Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard. A unified QR-code payment system used across all Indonesian banks. The primary payment workaround for foreign visitors when their credit cards are rejected by Komodo NP booking platform — provided their home bank app supports QRIS.
